Director's Welcome Message
Welcome and thank you for your interest in Contra Costa Family Medicine Residency Program located in Martinez, California. Our program is dedicated to training diverse, full-spectrum physician leaders who champion health equity in under-resourced communities both locally and globally. We welcome you to learn about our program and the people who make our unopposed residency program a unique place to begin your career in Family Medicine.
Our program was founded as a General Practice residency in the 1950s. In the 1970s we became one of the first Family Medicine residency programs in the nation. While medical education and Family Medicine has evolved over the last 50 years, we have maintained the core aspects of our program: high resident responsibility with a focus on acute care settings; one-on-one supportive teaching and supervision across the spectrum of care; and caring for historically marginalized communities.
Some brief highlights of our curriculum include community-based Family Medicine Clinic training; extensive practical and procedural obstetrics including abortion care; hospital-based medicine from surgical, internal medicine and family medicine perspectives; procedural training across all specialties; global health and a nationally recognized point of care ultrasound program; structured didactics and personal and professional development support group. We are a safety-net, integrated healthcare system with its heart in the community we serve. We enjoy tremendous collegiality between the medical specialties and all members of the care team, including nurses, social workers, and administrative staff. This plays a large role in why many of our graduating residents each year choose to begin their careers staying here to work as attendings.
