Contra Costa Health staffs an on-call 24 hour/7 days-a-week hazmat incident response team. The team responds to:

  • Technical assistance requests
  • Identification of unknown substances
  • Health hazard information
  • Cleanup oversight
  • Drug Labs
  • Chemical spills
  • Hazmat releases

Facilities must notify the Hazardous Materials Incident Response Team (HMIT) immediately upon discovery of a hazardous materials incident. The County Board of Supervisors has approved a Hazardous Materials Incident Notification Policy that specifies when and how to notify HMIT.
