Rehab staffContra Costa Health offers Occupational, Physical and Speech Therapy services for inpatients and outpatients. Both Occupational and Physical Therapy are offered at West County Health Center, Pittsburg Health Center, and Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in Martinez. Speech Therapy is available in Martinez and West County Health Center.

Inpatient Rehabilitation Therapy is provided in the acute care units and the psychiatric unit at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center. Therapists work with individuals and groups to assess needs, develop treatment strategies, provide education, and identify barriers to enable patients to reach their highest functional level prior to discharge. Therapy Services can teach compensatory strategies, recommend equipment and provide therapy interventions and exercise programs.

Rehabilitation Therapy Services include:

  • Hand therapy
  • Pediatric occupational therapy
  • Pelvic floor program for men and women
  • Physical therapy
  • Psychiatric occupational therapy
  • Speech therapy
  • Affiliated with Expressive Arts Intern Program

Occupational Therapists

Occupational therapistHelp people with mental, emotional, physical, and developmental disabilities to develop or re-learn skills to be self-sufficient in their day-to-day activities. Occupational Therapists work with people who have a recent injury, illness or surgery including:

  • Arthritis and joint disease 
  • Chronic progressive disorders (diabetes)
  • Cumulative trauma injuries (tennis elbow, carpel tunnel)
  • Hansen's disease (leprosy)
  • Psychological disorders (depression, anxiety, and psychosis) 
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Stroke
  • Traumatic brain injury 
  • Traumatic hand and upper extremity injury

Physical Therapists

Physical therapistEvaluate and treat people who have impairments that affect strength, balance, coordination, and the ability to walk or maneuver a wheelchair. They work with people who have:

  • Arthritis  
  • Back and neck pain
  • Chronic pain
  • Chronic progressive disorders
  • Hansen's disease
  • Orthopedic injuries or surgeries
  • Pelvic pain and pelvic floor dysfunction (incontinence, prolapse, bowel/bladder dysfunction, pre/post partum, and pre/post uro-gynecological surgery)
  • Spinal cord injury 
  • Stroke
  • Traumatic brain injury

Speech Therapy

Speech and Language Pathologists help people who have speech and language disorders. They evaluate and treat a variety of communication difficulties resulting from developmental delays, accidents and disease or illness. These may include:

  • Cognition
  • Language
  • Speech
  • Swallowing and eating
  • Voice
