An Ombudsman works for a government agency and responds to questions and concerns from the public about that agency's activities. In this unique position, an Ombudsman independently and impartially conducts investigations, solves problems and makes recommendations.

In Contra Costa County, the Hazardous Materials Ombudsman provides this public service for the Hazardous Materials Programs of Contra Costa Health Services. The Ombudsman also responds to questions and concerns about other environmental health issues. The Ombudsman reports to the Director of Contra Costa Health Services and the County Board of Supervisors.
