Contra Costa Health works with our schools to keep students healthy. Below are a few of the school-related services we provide.

School-Based Clinics

Public Health Clinics provides school-based health services to children, teens, and young adults on mobile clinic health vans and at satellite health centers throughout Contra Costa County. For more information to schedule an appointment, call the Public Health Care Coordination Unit (number below).

Community Oral Health Program

This program works in collaboration with schools, preschools and community partners to increase access to oral health services, by linking families with no- or low-cost resources. Services include oral health education, dental assessments, fluoride varnish, and dental sealants. Those identified as needing treatment are triaged into care.

STI Prevention and Control

Our STI program distributes condoms to help prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. The STD program also follows up on incomplete reporting or incomplete or incorrect treatment and provides presentations as time permits to youth, teachers and other entities serving youth in Contra Costa.

Immunization Assistance

Our immunization program offers technical support to schools, including looking up immunization records, translating foreign immunization documents and providing resources and guidance. We also maintain a searchable database of vaccination-exemption rates at hundreds of schools in the county.

Outbreaks (Communicable Disease Investigation and Control)

Schools are required to report outbreaks or cases of communicable diseases to our Communicable Disease Program who can assist the school with what to do to control the spread of disease. We also have an online guide for school administrators and nurses for the most common diseases and fact sheets for the school community.

Nutrition Education

Our Nutrition program provides nutrition education and promotes physical activity during the school day and in after-school programs in schools located in low-income census tracks. Through partnerships with schools, the program: provides in-class nutrition education promotes an environment that supports increased consumption of fruits and vegetables and decreased consumption of sugar sweetened beverages; engages youth to identify and address issues focused on access to healthy foods and physical activity opportunities in their communities; and supports school garden activities that incorporate nutrition education.

Safe Routes to Schools

This program educates students, teachers, principals, and parents about safe active transportation options, leads walk-to-school events and organizes educational assemblies.

Bicycling and Walking Promotion

Our Injury Prevention and Physical Activity Project provides educational traffic safety programs, bike helmet giveaways, bicycle rodeos and walk-to-school events.

Public Health Solutions

Public Health Solutions (PHS) is a training and internship program that offers youth a chance to learn about the field of public health and get work experience in a health organization. PHS participants are youth and young adults ages 14-19 from low income communities that are most affected by health inequities.

Youth who successfully complete an in-class training about public health have an opportunity to be matched to a paid internship that will provide them with the ability to blend classroom learning and work experience in a public health setting.

Lead Poisoning Prevention

Provides education and information about lead sources, including paint on older housing and lead safe work practices, and case management services for children with elevated levels of lead in their blood.
