Below are descriptions of the rotations in the three years of residency. including goals and call or night responsibilities. We have no 24-hour shifts

With few exceptions, our blocks are 2 weeks long. Many activities are repeated again in the year (for instance, Newborn Nursery in the R1 year is two 2-week blocks. That is why in the description below it says "2 x 2 weeks").

The following terms are used in the description of call:

  • Short call: A shift from 5 pm to 8 pm doing admissions.
  • Call back: Back-up call for the residents in-house. This is our back up for "Jeopardy" (see below), meaning that if the hospital gets busy, the ICU resident feels additional help is needed, and the Jeopardy resident is already working, then the call-back resident is called in. Only 2nd and 3rd years have call-back responsibilities.
  • Variable: Occurs as the "Jeopardy" resident: if you are "jeopardized", you are called in to cover the duties of another resident who is out for personal reasons or emergencies. You are given 24-hour advance notice.
