Clerkship Program

We are accepting students for rotations starting the end of July/early August through the fall. Applications will be accepted starting March 15 on a rolling basis.

The goals of our clinical clerkship program are:

To participate in the education and growth of medical students through clinical instruction and through exposure to a family medicine-based health system committed to care for the underserved.
To afford an opportunity for medical students who are applying to our Family Medicine residency program to "check us out" - and vice versa.

**We do not offer Core Clerkships in Family Medicine- only electives.**

**Exceptions to the timeline outlined below may be made for students from medical schools where core clerkships are completed by April (see more in "Eligibility Requirements" below).**

Types of clerkships

Hospital Medicine (4-week rotation. Runs mid-August to January; no rotations July – early August.) The student clerk functions as a sub-intern on the general hospital medicine inpatient service. Under the direct supervision of a senior Family Medicine resident and attending staff, you will admit, manage, and discharge patients; you will attend daily didactics, ward team rounds, and residency conferences. Cases include common hospital admission diagnoses: coronary vascular disease, diabetes, COPD, CVA, pancreatitis, HIV-related illness, endocarditis, peri-operative care, etc. The opportunity to manage surgical cases or assist in the operating room may be available.

Obstetrics/Family Medicine (4-week rotation) The clerk will divide their time between the busy Perinatal Labor and Delivery Unit, prenatal and gyn clinics, and the operating room. This may include evening or overnight hours.

General information

All clerkship rotations begin on a Monday and last four weeks. These dates are based on our residency's block schedule:
- 7/15/24 - 8/11/24
- 8/12/24 - 9/8/24
- 9/9/24 - 10/6/24
- 10/7/24 - 11/3/24
- 11/4/24 - 12/1/24 (off 11/28 and 11/29 for the holiday. For the ED rotation, there is a potential shift on 11/30)
- 12/2/24 - 12/29/24 (off for the 12/25 holiday. There is potential for a 3-week rotation ending 12/22)
- 1/6/25 - 2/2/25

Each clerk is expected to participate fully in teaching rounds and conferences. Clerks may be expected to participate in evening/night/weekend clinical duties; the Emergency Medicine clerkship requires regularly scheduled evening and weekend hours.
Students are welcomed and encouraged to participate in a range of educational experiences offered at our program, including in other clinical areas when available.
Short, problem-oriented research projects or quality assurance audits can be undertaken by any interested student.
Students are expected to have their own reliable transportation for their clinical duties.
Meals are provided during student duty hours.
The student (school) is responsible for malpractice/liability coverage. This MUST be on file prior to start of clerkship.
We are unable to provide housing.
Clerkship evaluations will not be completed for the rotation until the student has completed all off-boarding activities (per off-boarding checklist).

** Doing a clerkship does not guarantee getting an interview with our program. A clerk's ERAS application is reviewed in the same way as other applicants.

Eligibility requirements

Every applicant must be a registered student in good standing at an AAMC- or AOA-accredited US or Canadian medical school and provide a letter of good standing from your Dean.
The clerkship opportunity at CCRMC is reserved for 4th-year students who are interested in applying to our Family Medicine Residency through ERAS/NRMP.
For students whose medical school has accelerated structured curriculum, selected 3rd year medical students who have successfully completed their junior core clinical rotations in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Ob-Gyn, and Psychiatry/Behavioral Science will be considered for rotations beginning prior to July.
All students accepted to a clerkship rotation with a starting date between September 30 and January 31 must have filed an ERAS application designating our residency program for application before the starting date of the clerkship. These requirements are necessary to assure maximum availability of our limited clerkship positions for students who are applying to our residency program. (Please note that applicants to the residency are not required to do a clerkship with our program.)
Students are limited to one four-week clerkship per academic year.
Students must be covered for malpractice by their school and provide evidence of that coverage.
Students must provide a current Immunization Report.
