Safe preparation, storage, and handling of powdered infant formula guidelines:

Powdered infant formula is not a sterile product and may be contaminated with pathogens that can cause serious illness.  Correct preparation and handling reduce the risk of illness.

During production, powdered infant formula can become contaminated with harmful bacteria, such as Cronobacter sakazakii and Salmonella enterica. This is because, using current manufacturing technology, it is not feasible to produce sterile powdered infant formula.

During the preparation of powdered infant formula at home, inappropriate handling practices may also contribute to serious infant illness.

In most cases, it is safe to mix powdered infant formula following the manufacturer’s instructions on the container.  If your baby is younger than 2 months old, was born prematurely, or has a weakened immune system, you may want to take extra precautions to protect them from getting sick.
